SUMMER 2010, PART II

UPDATE - 19 JULY, 2010

The fun just keeps rolling on...

Today my work is being featured on the art blog Sex in Art!!

Also this week, my work is published on the front page of L Magazine's Art Section!! Click the link to read a review of Marked: A Show of Figure, the group show currently up at Like the Spice. Benjamin Sutton writes of my work: "[it is] strikingly intimate, but in entirely different ways, [they are] cinematic sex scenes, whose textures and palette are so full and lush you'd never guess they were watercolors." Thanks, Ben!!

In related news, Like the Spice and all the artists of Marked have been mentioned in The New York Observer, Look Into My Owl and Brooklyn The Borough.

For those multimedia junkies out there, you can now download the Podcast of Jenny Morgan, Chino Amobi and myself as we discuss what it is about the figure we love so much and where we see our work going in the future. Click this LINK and subscribe for Free!

Lastly, I've finally uploaded a 4-part step-by-step tutorial on how I paint to Facebook. In order to see the photos that document my work in progress as well as read an in-depth breakdown of my process, add My Page to your favorites today!

SUMMER 2010

UPDATE - 28 JUNE, 2010

As I've said before, the fun never stops - just when I think life is going to slow down and allow a small respite, it picks right back up and tosses me into the fray. Read on.

My three week residency in Limans, France ended up being an intense practice in visual journalism. I'll be working on translating my experience into a graphic travelogue over the course of the next year. As they occur, I'll be posting updates on the Projects page so check back in the Fall for the first glimpse into my time with the people of Limans.

This past winter I participated in an international sketchbook invitational called Semántica. The project collected the thoughts, writings and sketches of 15 artists from Latin and North America for an interactive exhibit at the Museo De Arte De El Salvador (MARTE). The show opened 15 April, 2010 to much success. You can read more about the exhibit and view exhibition photos HERE. You can also see a selection of my drawings HERE.

In other news, two new paintings have been added HERE that continue the intimate narrative series, Dirty Dirty Love. These two new works are part of a new body of images that represent an evolution in the project. Currently both paintings are on display at Like the Spice Gallery as part of the group show Marked: A Show of Figure. Marked features the work of 6 contemporary artists that specifically employ the figure as a tool to drive personal narratives. You can read more about the show HERE.

My work will also be on display at Art Hamptons this July. You can read more about the fair and what they are doing to drive awareness of the Brooklyn Gallery scene HERE.

Last but not least my family and I have relocated to Stamford, Connecticut. A new apartment, a new studio, a new town and new possibilities. Expect updates about our new home as I get to know it better and better.

VISITING ARTIST RESIDENCY

UPDATE - 23 FEBRUARY, 2010

In just a few short weeks I'll be flying to France to take part in a cultural exchange program a friend of mine is setting up in the south of France. For three weeks I'll live in the village of Limans, near Forcalquier, located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region of France. There, I'll be interviewing the residents, documenting the landscape and collecting stories about the region. The plan is to create an illustrated travelogue that acts as an intimate portrait of Limans. It's an exciting opportunity and I can't wait to begin!

I will be making regular updates on my Facebook Fan Page so if you want to keep abreast of everything as it unfolds login and add me HERE.

POETRY FOR BEGINNERS

UPDATE - 25 JANUARY, 2010

Released this month, my second book, Poetry For Beginners, written by Margaret Chapman and Kathleen Welton, is an introductory crash-course on the history and mechanics of one of the oldest forms of written language. "From ancient Greece to the present, Poetry For Beginners traces the wonders of the written word and shows how it is relevant in daily life." Featuring over 170 illustrations, it's already garnering praise from the academic world and is a book I am particularly proud to be a part of.

"An excitement about poetry comes through on every page of this book... I found myself wishing this book had been around when I was in high school."

--David Richo, author of Being True to Life: Poetic Paths to Personal Growth (Shambhala, 2009)

Visit your local bookseller or HERE to get your copy.

In other news, I have posted several photos HERE, taken this past November when I road tripped through Spain with my family. It was my third time visiting Spain but by far the most incredible. I shot over 1500 frames during our month-long vacation and visited 13 cities. I'll be posting photos as they are edited so please subscribe to my flcikr account or add me to your contacts to stay informed of updates.

Also announced, this September, I will be exhibiting my second solo show at Like the Spice Gallery. I don't want to get to far into describing what to expect, just know that this next show will build off the themes explored in Dirty Dirty Love. Please continue to check back here periodically for updates as the series unfolds.

DIRTY DIRTY LOVE

UPDATE - 20 May, 2009

Opening this Friday, May 22nd at Like the Spice Gallery, a solo exhibition of my painted and drawn works from the ongoing series, Dirty Dirty Love.

Dirty Dirty Love is a series I started in 2006 in an attempt to open a forum for dialog about what we view as socially acceptable and unacceptable within the context of sexuality. By depicting both taboo and mundane subjects, by interviewing and portraying real people in real context, the images created for Dirty Dirty Love are both truthful and universal. The goal is that viewers, whom may hold prejudice one way or another, call their judgments into question by being presented with something that transcends their limited exposure. Click HERE to read more about the series as well get info about the gallery, the opening and the artist's dinner that I will host May 29th.

Cheers.

DEMOCRACY FOR BEGINNERS

UPDATE - 3 February, 2009

Just one week remains until the official release of my latest book Democracy For Beginners! Published by Steerforth Press and Random House and written by Professor Robert Cavalier of Carnegie Mellon University, Democracy For Beginners is a critical look at the history and mechanics of this grand governmental experiment. Beginning with the rise of Democracy in 5th Century Athens and ending with it's future through the notion of “e-democracy” and the possibility of democratic practice across national boundaries via the internet, Democracy For Beginners traces the evolution of democracy as a political concept and addresses some of its main critics (from Plato to contemporary social choice theory).
