The El Salvador Sketchbook
For one calendar year I used this sketchbook as a visual diary, filling it with snap shots and reflections on daily events. Contrary to the sketchbooks' moniker, I never traveled to El Salvador while working on it, nor does it contain any work based on or inspired by the country. I started calling it The El Salvador Sketchbook because it was part of a multi-national project coordinated by artist Ana Urquilla that was later exhibited at the Museo de Arte de El Salvador (MARTE). The exhibition, entitled Semántica, was an experiment designed to subvert the established bureaucratic process of international exhibitions, bridging the gap between artist and audience often set in place by politics and institutional middlemen.

The contributing artists hailed from Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, the United States and Mexico, chosen in a chain-letter-like fashion as opposed to by concept or theme. Each artist was allowed to interpret their book however they saw fit. The books were collectively exhibited at MARTE for two months in which time the public was invited to explore the books, gaining some insight into the creative process of some far-off artists.
